The Truth About Thread Count:
What Really Matters for Luxury Sheets

So you’ve come to figure out what thread count is. Is it a trend or is it important? When buying bed sheets, one should consider thread counts. The common belief is that a higher thread count indicates better quality. It is not unusual for brands to advertise staggering counts — 700, 900, or even 1,500 threads. These impressive counts attract customers looking for high-end products. However, a high thread count does not mean greater softness. A set with 300 threads can feel more luxurious than one with higher thread counts. Thread count is important, but one should not solely focus on it when looking for the perfect sheets.

What is Thread Count?

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. For example, a sheet that boasts a 300-thread count has 150 threads running vertically and 150 threads running horizontally. However, it is not the only thing that matters. Several components determine the quality of sheets:

  • Type of fiber
  • Length of fiber
  • Spinning method
  • Choice of yarn
  • Processing
  • Craftsmanship

An example of a 300-thread-count sheet is one crafted from single-ply yarn. It can surround you with softness. Its luxurious feel far exceeds a 900-thread count sheet. High thread counts often disguise thinner, weaker fibers. A 900-thread count sheet will usually have the same pattern but uses multi-ply yarn, where each thread is composed of three thinner strands twisted together. These figures can cause discomfort.

The Downsides of High Thread Count

An increase in thread count can indicate better quality, but this is not always true. Multi-ply threads can trap heat, making sleep uncomfortable for warm sleepers. They can also cause skin irritation and discomfort. These threads are often kept longer, which can cause them to break easily, making them more fragile and of lower quality.

The experts suggest a thread count of 200 to 400. Most of the sheets in this thread count range are breathable and more durable. They're more likely to withstand the test of time. A thread count of less than 200 is an indicator of poorer quality. More than 400, specifically 600, thread count sheets have become a standard in the industry, but these are likely multi-ply, which significantly shortens their lifespan.

The most valuable component in selecting sheets is the materials and stitching. It will determine the softness and comfort. Strings like Supima and Egyptian carry long and extra-long staples and are a soft and durable cotton.
